The Spotlight Interview
- Tell us about the team this season – what are your biggest goals and highlights so far?
Sam Walker: “This season we are looking strong across all five teams. Our 1s come off the back of a very successful season in the East of Scotland league, having secured promotion, and with several improvements made throughout the squad and club, they feel ready to succeed in a new league — a challenge that will be difficult but exciting. Hopefully, our U20s can go one better this season and lift the title in their East of Scotland league. Having made some exciting coaching appointments, we feel our LEAFA teams have strong prospects for success, both in the local amateur leagues and in the national BUCS competitions.” - How do you balance intense training schedules with university studies and student life?
“Balance is key, yet difficult to achieve. Time management is the most important factor for me – setting daily and weekly targets to reach my academic goals allows me the freedom to play football and to excel as the best possible Club Captain for my teammates and all other squad members” - What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to incoming freshers wanting to join a sports team?
“Do it. Sports societies are one of, if not the best thing about University. I have met some amazing people being a part of the football club and if it wasn’t because of this society I wouldn’t have had some of the experiences I have been able to enjoy.” - As student athletes, what are the most important factors when choosing where to live? “The most important factor for myself when choosing where to live is accessibility. Easy access to both my university campus and the football training facilities is the biggest factor when choosing where to live”
- Have you had any funny or memorable experiences with teammates while house-hunting?
“Last year, my flatmates and I were struggling to secure a flat. At the end of August, we were offered a viewing for a flat, but none of us could make it at the time. I messaged my mate to ask if he could attend, but he said no, as he had one of his own viewings at that time. In the end, one of my flatmates was able to attend, and so the two people at the viewing ended up being my flatmate and the mate I’d originally messaged. We got the flat.” - What are the biggest challenges student renters face?
“There are so many challenges students face when renting: rising rent, rising bills, exploitation for being a student, and many more. In my opinion, the biggest problem is the sheer competition involved in securing a flat. The success rate is extremely low – you turn up to a viewing and find yourself up against 20 to 25 other groups for the same flat.” - If you could give one tip to other students about choosing a letting agent or landlord, what would it be?
“Personally, I think the most important thing is to be firm with yourself and not roll over. There’s a reputation among students for not being pushy enough – myself included. My advice would be to stand your ground, whether it’s about your deposit, maintenance, or repairs.” - How important is it to live close to your teammates?
“It’s important to me – although it’s different for everyone. I live with three other club members, and living with them is a whole lot of fun. There’s never a dull moment to be honest.” - What does the WhichPad sponsorship mean to the team?
“It really means a lot. Firstly, I’m so appreciative to WhichPad for partnering with us and giving students a platform to have a voice. Housing is a huge problem within the UK, particularly student housing, and WhichPad is helping give students a voice and support them through what can be a nerve-racking process.” - What’s next for the team?
“Our first team’s season starts within a month so everyone’s excited for that and after that’s underway planning for the big Welcome Week where we will host trials for around 200 people.”
